The governor made an appearance at the annual NAACP King dinner in Portland Monday night.
Mills spoke of making a difference on all levels "We must be vigilant to defend those rights. In our courts, in our state house, in our us capitol on our streets on a bus, or a prison cell in Birmingham or wherever injustice appears."
The event was also a way to help others.
Those attending Monday's event were asked to bring socks that will be donated to men, women and children who are experiencing homelessness.
