Friday is Wear Red Day for Heart Disease Awareness

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - People all across the country will be wearing red on Friday to raise awareness for heart disease.

The National Wear Red Campaign is in its 15th year.H

Since 1984 more women than men have died each year from heart disease and the gap continues to widen.

Rebecca Adams, a Wear Red Representative says, "A lot of people don't realize that Heart Disease is the number one cause of death. It's more than all cancers combined. It's one of those things that needs a lot more awareness. We are all walking around...90 percent of women are walking around with one or two risk factors that makes them a higher candidate for a heart attack. One woman will die every 80 seconds because of cardiovascular disease. That includes heart attack and stroke. These are scary statistics. It's really, really important to get the message out there for women to wake up!">

The good news is many cardiovascular diseases may be prevented by knowing your family heath history, knowing your numbers such as blood pressure and cholesterol and making simple lifestyle changes with diet and exercise.
