Folks in opposition of NECEC speak to Somerset County Commissioners

SKOWHEGAN, Maine. (WABI) - “Say No to the NECEC-“That’s the name of a group who voiced their concerns about the New England Clean Energy Connect Project to Somerset County Commissioners.

CMP has proposed bringing power from Quebec to Massachusetts through a 145-mile transmission line.

We're told the company would install part of the transmission line under the Kennebec River.

Those opposed are concerned it will affect wildlife habitat, the environment, and Somerset County tourism.

A spokesperson for Central Maine Power said the project addresses climate change.

Catharine Hartnett, Spokesperson for CMP, "So, if we want to preserve outdoor recreation and environmental habitat for the future, we need to think big and this project, the NECEC is a solution for that."

Sandra Howard, in opposition to the project, said, "For whatever the reason is that we all agree on this issue that this kind of unneeded project isn't warranted in our state."

Somerset County Commissioners said they'll meet again in December to discuss the matter further.

The project still needs regulatory approval.
