Fire destroyed a building on Whitehead Island in Knox County Tuesday night.

The flames were reported around 8:30 in the evening.

Whitehead Island is just off the coast of St. George.

Authorities say no one was on the island when the fire broke out.

The fire destroyed a small, wooden structure used for septic equipment.

Flames did spread to some nearby woods, prompting both the Maine Forest Service and Maine Marine Patrol to be called in.

The Whitehead Station Lighthouse was not affected.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Whitehead Station Lighthouse was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 and was automated in 1982. The Light Station currently serves as an adult education center.
