FAIRFIELD, Maine (WABI) - A Fairfield man was taken into custody Tuesday evening for causing a police standoff.

33 year-old Kenneth Ruggiero of Fairfield was arrested and charged.

Fairfield PD was called to a home on West Street just before noon for a domestic violence incident on Tuesday.

Waterville police and a negotiator were also on scene.

After hours of unsuccessfully getting Ruggiero to exit the residence, State Police were called to assist.

They shut down Montcalm Street for hours and deployed their tactical team to ensure public safety.

"He wound up barricading himself inside. We tried to negotiate with him for a while and that didn't work. So we wound up calling in the State Police tactical team," said Fairfield Police Chief Thomas Gould.

Ruggiero was taken to Somerset County Jail after surrendering.

He's charged with Domestic Violence Assault, Domestic Violence Terrorizing and Refusing to submit to arrest.
