HERMON, Maine (WABI) - Elementary students in Hermon have become "soup-er" heroes.

As part of a community service initiative the students were tasked with collecting cans of soup.

The top three soup-collecting classrooms would get extra recess, popcorn, or pizza.

The collection efforts were a big success, and the students were pleased.

"We have been collecting soup."

"for the people who don't have cans of soup."

"I think it's really great that we're giving back to the community and helping people who are less fortunate."

Jenny Perry, principal at the school, says "We set a goal of three hundred cans and we ended up raising two thousand one hundred and sixty cans because of their great generosity to help others in their community."

The soup will be donated to a Hermon food pantry.
