Authorities say a man is in the hospital after crashing a stolen vehicle on Maine Avenue in Bangor during a high speed chase.

We're told the incident started on Route 2 in Hermon late Monday afternoon.

Officials called off the pursuit as they entered Bangor when the suspect began driving erratically.

The driver clipped at least two vehicles on Maine Avenue before spinning out of control and running off the road.

We know emergency responders had to cut him out of the vehicle.

He was then taken to the hospital.

We spoke with one witness who described the moment of the crash.

"I was driving along and I just mainly saw a bunch of these cars collide. Just saw a big cloud of dust and car parts flying. And like I said the GMC spun around and hit the tree real hard, said Sharli Molott.

We understand at least three vehicles were damaged.

The crash remains under investigation by the Bangor Police Department.
