Donation opens door to CDL program at EMCC

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A major step forward at Eastern Maine Community College.

That's what school officials call the donation of a fleet of trucks by Dead River.

They'll be used by the school's Commercial Driver's License program.

The vehicles will be used across the community college system, not just in Bangor.

It will let students graduate with a CDL.

"Now our students can have an even greater range of employment opportunities," said EMCC's Lowell Gardner. "Not only my program but also students in the Fire Science program, the students that would be driving emergency vehicles and also our students in our electrical and automation programs."

"The industry certainly is in dire need of having CDL and employees out there," added instructor Mike Boyd. "The companies that we deal with, they are desperate to have drivers in the trade so that suits us all the way around."

The goal is to roll out the program this fall.
