Distress call leads to search for sailboat off coast of Mount Desert Island

HANCOCK COUNTY, Maine (WMTW) The United States Coast Guard is searching for a 40-foot sailboat off the coast of Mount Desert Island.

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said a 911 dispatcher received a distress call around 3 a.m. Saturday. The search is focused about 20 miles south of Mount Desert Island, she said.

Rescue crews from Station Southwest Harbor, Air Station Cape Cod and the Canadian Coast Guard are involved in the search, she said.

The three people on board the boat were identified as Charlotte Kirby, Wilfredo Lombardo and Nathaniel Davis, she said.

All three sailed from Somes Sound.

The name of the 40-ft sailboat is Dove.

Few other details are known. The spokesperson said rescuers have not spotted a debris field or any other sign of the boat.
