BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - We're learning more about the night in March two homeless people were found dead inside a burning box truck in Bangor.

The man accused of killing the two pleaded not guilty today.

25-year-old John De St. Croix is charged with murder and arson.

Court documents say he told authorities he'd been drinking with the victims, 43-year-old Michael Bridges and 36-year-old Desiree York.

He says he was upset Bridges threatened to hit York.

De St. Croix says he later found Bridges passed out in the back of a box truck in Penobscot Plaza...he says he closed the back door and built a fire near the truck.

He says he then heard banging and a female screaming.

He believes it was York, who he says he did not think was in the truck.

Authorities say De St. Croix is the one who called 9-1-1.

The Medical Examiner ruled Bridges and York died from asphyxiation.

De St. Croix is being held without bail.
