The Maine Department of Education wants the legislature to expand funding for career and technical education for middle school students for the 2018-2019 school year.

A new state law allows, but does not require, schools to offer such opportunities for sixth through eighth graders this school year.

According to Maine's Chief Academic Officer, 11 other states have done so, and said these programs expose students to skills and behaviors they need to compete in technologically advanced workplaces.
