Tuesday is the deadline day for hunters to apply for an 'any deer permit.'
It's free to apply online for the antlerless permit lottery.
More than 66,000 permits will be issued this year, which is 20,000 more than last year.
The 'any deer permit' is used by Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to manage Maine's white-tail deer population.
They say because the last couple winters have been less harsh that normal, the deer population has rebounded in most of Maine.
"So by removing some of these female deer, we can adjust the population a bit and not only is it better reducing disease and starvation within the deer population but it also reduces car v. deer accidents, reduces property damage, and also helps by keeping lyme disease instances lower," said Mark Latti, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
The deadline to apply is Tuesday at midnight. The drawing for the lottery is September 8th.
Youth Deer Hunting Day is October 21st and the season starts for Maine residents on the 28th.
