Darling's gives to local cancer charities

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A local car dealership has been in a charitable mood the past few days.

After donating $1,700 to two cancer care charities in the greater Ellsworth area on Tuesday, Wednesday the folks at Darling's were at it again in Bangor.

The donations went to Sarah's House, Champion the Cure Challenge and Cancer Support of Maine in Bucksport.

They donated $2,600 in total. It all came from a program that allowed customers purchasing vehicles the opportunity to give $100 to a cancer related charity of their choosing.

"Unfortunately, everybody is touched by this type of disease," said General Manager Otis Soohey. "Ultimately we want to give them a chance to decide where does the money go or where they want it to go. And ideally, we wanted to pick local charities because we like to keep it local if we can."

"So, Sarah's House is a privately funded cancer hospitality house, and we survive on donations like this one from Darling's," said Executive Director Delores Landry. "It provides us the ability to provide lodging for folks that are traveling to Cancer Care for their treatment."

Next week, Darling's will be holding a similar ceremony in Augusta to donate to the Harold Alfond Center.
