HAMPDEN, Maine (WABI) - Construction continues at the new waste facility in Hampden.

Fiberight CEO Craig Stuart-Paul says the construction phase of the first large scale waste processing plant of its kind in the U.S. is near completion.

The facility will take waste from more than 120 communities while employing 45 people.

"The main goal is to take a second or third pass at the waste stream and increase the recycling rate in the state of Maine from 40% to hopefully 70% in this region, and we do that by our ability to really dissect the waste stream, recover materials from it, and process most of it into elements of value," said Stuart-Paul.

Construction is expected to be completed in March.
