Coast Guard Cutter Boats Break up Kennebec River Ice Jam
The U.S. Coast Guard has broken up ice jams in Maine on the Kennebec River.
The cutters Tackle and Bridle headed up the river Wednesday morning. Ice breaking should prevent future flooding. Coast Guard officials say they usually don't do ice breaking operations in the winter, but the jams have produced heavy flooding this year.
Lisa Chasteen, head officer of the Tackle, tells the Kennebec Journal she saw water flowing when the vessels travelled up the river Tuesday.
