City councilors: Face coverings are required in downtown Rockland
Face coverings must now be worn in downtown Rockland as well as in any indoor public spaces throughout the city.
It's based on an order approved last night by city councilors.
But Rockland's City Manager says the order cannot be enforced.
The Village Soup reports the issue was not crafted as an ordinance.
That requires a specific process and a public hearing before it can be voted on.
Even after it has been approved, it would not take effect for 30 days.
If the Governor issues an executive order mandating masks, then Rockland Police could enforce that state law.
The city has a supply of face coverings to give to those who need them.
Crews will also put up signs to make visitors aware of the order.
