Bangor firefighters saved a man from an abandoned home Wednesday evening.

Just after 5 the fire department received a call that smoke was coming from a home on Essex Street that was condemned by the city earlier this year.

Officials say that because the building was condemned extra precautions needed to be taken before anyone could enter.

"We cautiously went inside because the building was deemed to be unsafe to go into," said Asst. Fire Chief Anthony Riitano. "Where the smoke conditions were very light we did make entry. We did find two small fires and there was a homeless person inside the building. He was very disoriented and was having problems breathing."

He was taken to St. Joseph to be treated.

Officials say it's likely the fires were started for warmth.

Essex Street was closed until around 7.

It's unknown at this point if the man will face charges.
