BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A pair of area organizations went shopping Monday night in an effort to help those in need.
Families of Bangor firefighters and employees of Nickerson O'Day dropped by the The Briar Patch in downtown Bangor.
They were in the market for some gifts to donate to Toys for Tots.
"We're collecting toys and books for children in need so that they have a Christmas, too," said Julianna Spencer, whose father is a firefighter and mom works for Nickerson O'Day.
"It's nice to be able to give back to the community in more than just an emergency situation," said BFD's Jared Bowden. "We deal with families on what is usually the worst day of their lives. Knowing that we can make their holiday a little bit better by helping out and having fun shopping with our families, it's nice."
"Seeing them pull up every year and the families coming here and pick out some great gifts for the kids that need them it's just really great," said Briar Patch owner Gibran Graham.
The Briar Patch offered them a discount on the gifts to help stretch the donated money.
In total they spread $2,500 across a few stores in the area.
It was all dropped off at the Toys for Tots Bangor location at the end of the night.
