The 10-month-old girl severely injured in a crash last week died Monday morning in the hospital, her family and York County Sheriff Bill King said.

Gabrielle Kennedy was involved in a crash last week on Route 202 in Waterboro.

The driver of the box truck that slammed into the turning SUV she was in has been charged. Rene Romero, 53, of Lynn, Massachusetts, is charged with aggravated driving to endanger, officials said.

The baby's mother, Ellen Kennedy, 37, of Sanford, who was driving the SUV, was not hurt. Romero was also uninjured, King said.

Romero appeared in court Friday via video from the York County Jail. Romero did not enter a plea.

He was ordered held on $10,000 bail and can't drive a motor vehicle.

"We wish to extend our most humble appreciation to the extraordinary first responders at the scene, the doctors and nurses at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, and to all of those who have offered support, kind offerings, and heartfelt love," the Kennedy family said in a note provided by King. "Under the most painful and tragic of situations, our family has had the opportunity to be witness to pure kindness by strangers, an outpouring of support from our community and the unwavering love and support from our family."

The family asks for donations to be made in Gabrielle's honor to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

"It truly is the most extraordinary place for a child to receive treatment and for a family to feel support, comfort and strength," the Kennedys said.
