DIXMONT, Maine. (WABI) - Summer is coming to an end and fall is right around the corner- that means its apple season in Maine.
Emily Holmes, Co-Owner of Maine-ly Apples said, "We have people who come just once just because they want to pick apples and don't really care what they pick, and then people come and pick their favorite because they wait all season for them."
Several orchards across the state are hosting events over the weekend to kick off the apple harvest.
"Fall is such a great time in Maine, and of course, it's beautiful here in the orchard."
Maine-ly Apples in Dixmont is one of several participating locations for the statewide event- Maine Apple Sunday.
"We will have free hayrides, we will offer a free drawing and free samples and giveaways, we have the Dixmont Fire and Rescue come and they do a barbecue lunch."
We're told the orchard has 50 varieties of apples.
Co-owner Emily Holmes said this year the season has come a bit early- but don't worry apple lovers, you can pick the Paula Red."
"Very good for eating, baking, excellent for applesauce."
Holmes said the favorite part of her job is getting to know their customers.
"I see a lot of the same people come back and I learn to identify people by their favorite apple or some people come just for ciders and I know what they want."
If you find orchards appealing, Holmes offered this advice.
"We offer picking buckets, we offer semi-dwarf trees, so they're not too tall, so you're able to pick right off the ground. We just tell people to always be careful with your apples. Always pick them gently, place it in your buckets gently, especially the little ones down there with their buckets."
Maine-ly Orchards is open seven days a week from 10 to 5.
