UNITY, Maine (WABI) - A crash in Unity has left a man and his 5-year-old granddaughter with life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the crash occurred around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon on Albion Road when a woman in an SUV struck Clement Blakney and his granddaughter as they were crossing the road on a lawnmower.

Officials say both Blakney and his granddaughter were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center with very serious injuries.

Police say the woman in the SUV was also taken to the hospital but it is believed she suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say they don't yet have any reason to believe the driver of the S-U-V was speeding.

It's early in the investigation. Whether or not charges will be brought, it's too early in the investigation to know that. But we don't see any obvious recklessness or criminal conduct at this point," Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton said.

The road is back open, but police will be back on scene today to reconstruct the crash and continue their investigation.
