Two people injured after fire in Harpswell; home destroyed

HARPSWELL, Maine (WMTW) - Two people were sent to the hospital with burn injuries after a fire at a home in Harpswell Thursday morning.

Several town fire departments, including Harpswell, Brunswick and West Bath responded to the fire on 22 Smokehouse Road. Officials say the call came in around 4:00 a.m.

According to responding fire crews, 4 people were at the home and 2 were taken to the hospital to be treated for burn injuries. One of the occupants had to jump out of a second-story window to escape the flames.

The fire destroyed the single-family home and also spread to the nearby woods. Crews were able to get the flames under control by around 6:30 a.m. but were still working to put out hot spots.

The State Fire Marshall’s office is now heading to the scene to investigate. Officials say it’s too early to determine a cause; the homeowner believes the fire started in a stairwell.

There are no road closures associated with the response but due to the narrow nature of the roads in the area and the size of the response, drivers should take caution.
