AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - After Tuesday’s primary election in Maine, Joe Baldacci had the highest percentage of the vote for the Second Congressional District. But when the results of Ranked Choice Voting tabulatons were announced early Friday morning, former Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap was named the winner of the democratic nomination after multiple rounds of elmination.

Dunlap released a statement on his Facebook page following the announcement-

“Today’s results tell us that people want real change and a better future. I thank the other Democratic candidates for mounting exceptional campaigns and raising important issues across the state.

Now it’s time for us to come together to defeat extremist Paul LePage. Every so often Paul comes up to Maine from his real home in Florida so he can run for office again. But Mainers remember the hell he put us through the last time he held office: stripping healthcare away from families, letting our property taxes skyrocket, embarrassing our state on a national level.

Together, we’re going to defeat Paul LePage one more time and make sure he’s never on the ballot again. While we’re at it, we’re going to fight to advance policies that will actually help Mainers — like Medicare for All, affordable childcare, a lower cost of living, and stopping this illegal war in Iran. "

Joe Baldacci also released a statement following the results of RCV.

“It’s early ( or late ) as the case may be I want to congratulate Matt [Dunlap} on the great race he ran and his victory tonight. I also want to thank the voters and commend the hard work of the Secretary of State’s office for securing the integrity of the democratic process.

I pledge to Matt my full support and will do whatever I can to help elect him as our next United States Representative for Maine’s Second District. Also congratulate Jordan Wood and Paige Loud in running a hard fought campaign.

Thank you to thousands of supporters across Maine who sustained us over this 5 months. You were invaluable to our efforts to turn this country around from this disastrous administration. We ran a strong campaign that we can be proud and we are now united to help the Democratic Party win in November across the board.

Thank you. "
