Hampden Academy to face Cheverus in Class A state girls basketball championship

HAMPDEN, Maine (WABI) - The No. 2 Hampden Academy Broncos are up against the No. 1 Cheverus Stags in the Class A state championship.

The Broncos dispatched No. 7 Lewiston, No. 3 Camden Hills, and No. 1 Mt. Ararat on the way to the Class A North Championship.

The players described what’s led H.A. to another state title game appearance.

“We knew we wanted to win the regional game really badly, but we wanted to make it to states even more, obviously because that’s where we got last year. We just had to know what we had to do and lock back in,” said Eve Wiles, junior guard.

“We were there last year, so we know what we missed out on. We just worked hard every day this year to get back where we were,” said Aubrey Shaw, junior power forward.

“Mt. Ararat played Southern last year, so they’re both kind of similar in that way. They’re both really good at shooting. We just need to be able to take (the) Mt. Ararat (game plan) and do what we did against them to Cheverus,” said Grace LaBree, senior center.

Tipoff between Hampden Academy and Cheverus is Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Portland’s Cross Insurance Arena.
