Dexter continues to compete in Top 25 round of T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights program
Grand prize includes $1 million field upgrade, renovated weight room, stadium expert consultation, SEC Championship Game trip
DEXTER, Maine (WABI) - Dexter Regional High School is continuing to compete in the Top 25 round of T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights program.
The Tigers have already secured a $25,000 prize and a T-Mobile tailgate home game against Houlton on Sat. Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
Now, they’re collecting online votes for the grand prize of a $1 million field upgrade, a renovated weight room from Gronk Fitness, consultation with stadium experts, and an all-expenses paid trip to the SEC Championship Game for 16 school representatives.
“I think it’s a big honor. It’s really big for our school,” said Landen Sillanpaa, freshman quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back.
“I think it’s pretty cool coming from a small community and having everyone in the whole state of Maine being able to vote for us,” said Kody Kimball, senior quarterback, running back, linebacker.
The Tigers are trying to win so they can have their own Friday night light home games. They currently play on Saturday afternoons.
“It’d be big for us just because we’ve never really had that. It would just be nice so we don’t have to travel everywhere to go play under lights,” said Sillanpaa.
“It’d definitely change the environment and the vibe. It would be a lot cooler than just playing under the sun as our lights,” said Bryce Cooper, senior quarterback, running back, slot receiver, safety, linebacker.
“I think it’d be pretty cool to come when we’re adults and see on Friday nights what our team can do,” said Kimball.
The players are happy to see the support for their program.
“It feels pretty good, honestly. I was kind of surprised to see how much everybody actually cares about it,” said Sillanpaa.
“We’re a small town, so us getting this many votes is definitely pretty cool to see. Keep voting. We need as many votes as we can get. Share it to everyone you know, make TikToks, make any post you can to get us votes,” said Cooper.
Online voting runs through Oct. 24, with the winner being announced six days later.
