Hermon High Students teach financial literacy to elementary students

HERMON, Maine (WABI) - On Wednesday, students from the Patricia A Duran School in Hermon took a break from learning from their teachers to learn from some high school students.

The older students are in a personal finance class, and they’re taking part in a nationwide initiative known as Jump$tart Teen Teach-In to help younger students learn about financial literacy.

“Just about the different things you can save for and buy and how you can learn. I learned more about banks and money just because when I grow older, I can save and invest,’” said Madison, a fourth-grade student.

“It’s something that everyone has to be able to do, manage their own finances. It doesn’t matter what you do for a job or career, it’s something that everyone needs to be capable of doing. So, it’s important to build that fundamental understanding and early age so they can be successful later,” said Michael Rene, a Hermon High School student.

The high school students read the elementary students a story and acted in a skit to help illustrate the importance of saving money.

“I know from my experience I didn’t know a lot about it when I was younger. I didn’t save my money, and I had to learn that, have it myself of like how to save, and I think this class is really beneficial so that they can learn to save and get that habit started now, and then when they take this class they already have a lot of experience,” said Kristina Judkins, a Hermon High School student.
