Ellsworth apartment kitchen fire displaces 8

ELLSWORTH, Maine (WABI) - Eight people are in temporary housing after a fire in their Ellsworth apartment.

According to Ellsworth’s fire chief, crews were called Saturday to the fire on Oak Street.

He says when firefighters got there, a sprinkler system had already turned on and put out the fire in the basement apartment unit.

While there was significant damage to the apartment’s kitchen, he says the sprinkler system stopped the fire from spreading to other areas of the building while minimizing the risk to those living there.

Nobody was hurt.

Officials say unattended cooking caused the fire.
