Penobscot Valley Country Club may soon be sold
ORONO, Maine (WABI) - Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono could soon be under new ownership.
The current owner hopes to get a deal done before the golfing season begins in Maine.
Larry Springer tells WABI he has agreed on a sale price with a buyer, but it’s early in the process.
The buyer is Matt Kirtland who bought the Lucerne Golf Club two years ago.
Springer said he had multiple interested parties, including one potential buyer that wanted to make it a nine hole course and develop homes in the remaining area.
He hopes a sale can be finalized within the month.
If not, he says he considered closing for the year but doesn’t want to do that to club members at such a late date.
He has over 100 members signed up for the season.
If under Springer’s control this year, he says he would have golf but will not run the restaurant on the top floor of the club house.
He would instead offer some food and drink to golfers on the ground floor.
Springer said both parties and their attorneys were meeting Wednesday to go over sticking points in the deal.
If finalized, it would make two courses for Kirtland in the area that have golf history attached as Lucerne and Penobscot Valley were both designed by famed golf course designer Donald Ross.
