AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - Three Maine children with critical illnesses are going hunting for moose this fall. Governor Mills and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Judy Camuso presented moose hunting permits to the young hunters today.

The permits are given out as part of legislation that requires three permits be given to a Maine based organization for children with critical illnesses who live in Maine. The hunt will be guided by Moose Maine Kids, a non-profit with the purpose of providing kids a chance to explore a variety of outdoor activities.

”We got a boatload of volunteers that are looking to help out on these hunts, probably way more than we could ever use,” said Moose Maine Kids executive director Ron Greco. “The outpouring of support for this across the state, and even as far away as Pennsylvania, I’ve had people reach out wanting to donate their time and help out, so it’s pretty amazing. So, you guys are going to have a great time, and hopefully, we get to see some beautiful Maine moose, and hopefully we’ll get to harvest some beautiful Maine moose.”

“So, I’d like to say thank you to Barbara Bush hospital and Maine Children’s Medical Care for everything,” said 10-year-old Aiden Palmer of Readfield.

Along with Palmer, 12 year-old Kellan Tilton of Detroit and 20 year-old Christopher Mitchell of Island Falls were also given permits.
