CARIBOU, Maine (WABI) - Governor Mills held a ceremonial signing Friday for a bill to keep the Maine Veterans Homes in Caribou and Machias open.

The ceremony was held at the home in Caribou.

Mills was joined by legislators, city council members, and residents of the veterans home.

Both chambers of the legislature voted unanimously in favor of keeping the two veterans homes open.

The new law requires legislative approval to close veterans homes.

“There’s always work that needs to be done and the bill envisions that, the bill says we’ll put together a group of stakeholders to keep working on this to analyze what’s going on across the state what people need and where they need it whether its outpatient care, hospice care, find out what it is and where they need it and lets get it done,” said Governor Mills.

Following the ceremony, Mills toured the home and met with veterans thanking them for their service.
