While the offensive numbers jump off the page, head coach Nick Derba said his team needs to pick up the pitching and defense from the Saturday and Sunday finals.

Derba explained how those areas are the pillars of what makes a conference contender if the offense dries up on any given day.

It’s another test for Maine this weekend with NJIT coming to Orono. The Highlanders are tied atop America East Division B with Stony Brook at 7-2.

“Pitching and defense are going to be what will carry us to an America East Championship. I’d love to say we’re going to score 45 runs a weekend. I don’t see that happening just knowing baseball in general. We have to be able to win 1-0 games. That comes down to clean baseball. Pick the ball up, throw it across, and throw strikes,” said Derba.

Game One is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, with two more matinees over the weekend. You can catch the Black Bears and NJIT on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
