BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A new program at the Mount Desert Island Biological Lab is changing the way Maine scientists study drug discovery and development.

MDI Bioscience will focus on using non-mammalian models to lead to pharmaceutical discovery, meaning they will study species like zebrafish and 3-D cell structures rather than mammals to test potential drugs for the market.

The program will focus on increasing efficiency in drug discovery.

James Stricland, who has been selected to lead the program, says for every 5,000 drugs discovered, only one makes it to market.

MDI bioscience will aim to improve that and effectively decrease waste in the process.

The program will initially focus on drugs to treat kidney diseases but plans to expand to help treat other organs and systems in the future.
