UMaine Women’s Basketball takes regular season conference title

ORONO, Maine (WABI) - The University of Maine women’s basketball team closing out the regular season against UMBC Sunday afternoon.

With a win, the Black Bears capture sole possession of the America East regular season title.

It was senior day at the Cross Insurance Center.

Maine celebrating fifth-year grad student Maeve Carroll, who’s coming off a career-high 32 points in Saturday’s win.

Maine took a 21 point lead in the 3rd quarter, thanks to a game-high 24 points from the junior Anne Simon.

Maine wins its 12th in a row, 71-47 over UMBC.

“Right now I’m so happy, I’m so happy for the team, I’m so happy for everyone. We worked so hard at the beginning and no one trust us. We kept working and working hard every day, and now we are here and very happy,” said Alba Orios, a sophomore guard.

“Just so proud of our team you know? We’ve come so far this year and I think at the beginning of the year, I don’t know if it was on the front of everyone’s mind but as the season kept going and as we kept improving. I’m just so proud of them,” said head coach Amy Vachon.

After starting the season 2-7, the Black Bears finish strong to win the America East regular season title for the fourth time in the last five years.
