HAMPDEN, Maine (WABI) - First responders in Hampden came together to give kids a very special experience today.

They held a special “Touch A Truck Event”, where kids could learn firsthand about the various emergency vehicles being used by the town, like fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars.

Children could take a look inside the vehicles, ask officers and firefighters a variety of questions, and some even got a chance to cool off with the fire hose and some ice cream.

The event was organized to give the kids a chance to experience these vehicles up-close, rather than just learning about them secondhand.

”Kids get a chance to read about fire trucks and police cars in books, but to come out and have a hands on opportunity to get in the trucks, to see how the equipment works, it really is invaluable for kids and they really enjoy it,” said Matt Thomas, a paramedic and fire fighter with the Hampden Fire Department.

With COVID restrictions easing, the police and fire departments hope to be able to resume in-school visits in the fall.
