LEWISTON, Maine (WMTW) - A new proposal would change Lewiston Middle School’s dress code to allow students to wear hats and hoods inside.

A group of classmates researched the current policy.

They found punishments for violations were disproportionately given to students of color.

Lewiston Superintendent Jake Langlais said the proposal is about helping students feel comfortable at school.

“Hats and hoods can help students feel safe. They can cover a bad hair day, which in middle school can be the worst thing ever,” Langlais said. “I’m really, really proud of the students. They took the time, they’ve done it right and they provided good information that adults are listening to.”

The proposal is now being worked on by a school board committee.
