GUILFORD, Maine (WABI) - A family-owned furniture store in Guilford has been sold to new owners who plan to continue the legacy of the 65-year-old business.

”I grew up working here. My dad and my uncle were the Davis Brothers. They started the business in 1955,” said Tony Davis.

After leaving the Navy in 1985, Tony bought in as a third partner.

”They retired, I continued the business, been here 36 years,” Tony said.

The 65-year history of Davis Brothers has seen a lot of changes.

”Originally, they sold televisions, appliances, flooring, everything else. Now, we’re exclusively furniture,” Tony said.

Tony’s wife Patti joined him in running the business in 2000, but now they’re ready to move on.

”It has a lot of character. It’d be hard to recreate this in a another store,” said David Speed.

David and Kara Speed are the new owners of Davis Brothers Furniture.

”I’m originally from Dover-Foxcroft Maine. I went down south to southern Maine, went to school there, got a degree, had been living there for about two decades, met Kara, and started a family there,” David said.

They returned to the area to be closer to family and heard about the opportunity to purchase the business.

”It’s kind of bittersweet, I mean that it’s out of the family, but it’s great that we got a great young couple that’s hardworking, that’s smart, and they’re going to do really well,” Tony said.

”We have a transition that we want to help the new people through. David and Kara have been really awesome,” Patti said.

David and Kara say they don’t plan to make many changes.

”If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. It’s doing great. They have such unique furniture here,” Kara said.

As for Tony and Patti, they’re looking forward to a relaxing summer by a lake.

”Slowing down a bit, just enjoying each other maybe outside of work for a change,” Patti said.

”We’re just excited to be here, excited to bring the family back, be a part of the community and just hope everyone comes in and experiences a great family atmosphere like it has been,” Kara said.
