BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Love that School.

That’s the name of the campaign to build a new sports facility at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor.

Wednesday school officials, students, alumni, project partners, and others came together to celebrate the Mary Ellen and Edward Darling Athletic Center.

The building namesakes were there for the ribbon-cutting and dedication of the new gym.

Inside, there’s a basketball court, fitness center, and more.

While there was a delay in the process due to the pandemic, that didn’t take away the excitement.

”It’s so needed. We love the gym across the street, and we’ve had a lot of great experiences there. There’s a lot of character there. And we made do for a long time, and a lot of people did a lot of great things, but to have this opportunity now with so many members of the community helping us and ultimately creating such a positive opportunity, we’re very, very excited,” said Dan O’Connell, John Bapst Athletic Director.

“It’s really crazy. I’m super excited. I have one more year on that, and I really can’t wait to see how the students react,” said student body president elect, Audra Brooks.

Only a few students have been in the new gym.

School officials say they can’t wait to share the athletic facility with the rest of the school.
