Maine guard Fogarty sets program three point record for a game, ends slump
Fogarty made 10 three pointers against UNH Sunday
ORONO, Maine (WABI) - UMaine women’s basketball split with New Hampshire over the weekend. Guard Kelly Fogarty set the program record for three pointers in a game during Sunday’s win. She made 10 threes to lead the Black Bears to victory.
“There’s the record.”
“I mean it feels good but I was pretty mad going into that game, and the games before,” says UMaine guard Kelly Fogarty, “So, I didn’t really even care about the record. I was just glad I was hitting shots for the team again.”
Fogerty breaking her own record on Sunday. Three different Black Bears have now set the new mark since January 2019. Fogerty, Dor Saar, and Parise Rossignol.
“There are very few plays we set up to run for people. People score in the flow of our offense,” says UMaine head coach Amy Vachon, “Fanny said yesterday you know I was open, but Kelly had hit six in a row, so I just passed it to her.”
“I know especially like Dor, when she knows I’m hitting, she tries to find me,” says Fogarty, “I can see it in her eyes.”
Kelly started the year in a slump.
“It was no secret, we all knew it,” says Vachon, “Her, how she handled it was inspiring.”
She worked hard with the former record holder Rossignol on her shot.
“Me and her get a lot of extra shots, she’s always rebounding for me,” Kelly says, “I asked her to clip some of my stuff from last year, and we kind of just focused in on my footwork. I don’t think it was a matter of how much I was practicing but maybe just practicing a little bit smarter.”
Coach and player are both happy Kelly found her groove as they prepare for their home opener.
“Once I hit a few, I just felt like myself again,” says Fogarty, “It was like practice it wasn’t anything that was surprising to do.”
“I mean I have seen her hit 20 in a row,” says Vachon, “I know that you’re a good shooter. Keep letting her know that I do have confidence in her. That it would turn around.”
