AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - The Maine CDC is actively looking for a new strain of the coronavirus that has been found in three U.S. states so far.

Dr. Nirav Shah says the strain, called B117, has been found in California, Colorado, and Florida.

He says data shows this version is more infectious, spreading with more ease, but symptoms of the illness have been found to be less severe.

Shah says the new strain is just another reason to keep being as safe as possible.

“No virus can make you sick if it can’t get to you in the first place,” he said Monday. “Face coverings plus physical distancing significantly reduce the likelihood that the virus will get to you in the first place. What can you do right now? You can be prepared to double down on those same bedrock principles.”

Dr. Shah says although this is a new strain, the currently developed coronavirus vaccinations will be effective against it.
