AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - More Mainers are filing first-time unemployment claims now than have in months. The Maine Department of Labor reports 3,100 initial claims for state jobless benefits were made for the week ending December 12th.

That’s a level not seen since mid-July.

Initial claims for state aid began to rise the previous week. That was the same time Maine first started seeing new daily COVID-19 cases rise above 400.

About 900 claims were made for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. That’s down from about 1,200 the week before.

About 13,900 weekly certifications were filed for state aid, with 17,200 continued claims filed under PUA.

In addition, 12,500 weekly certifications were filed for the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program last week.

There were 85 weekly certifications filed for the state Extended Benefits program, too.
