UMaine women’s basketball facing road challenges head on
Maine plays at Northeastern on Sunday
ORONO, Maine (WABI) - UMaine women’s basketball plays at Northeastern Sunday. The Black Bears get star forward Fanny Wadling back. The traveling UMaine team is still getting used to the new circumstances of the road...
“Get tested five days a week. The girls cant shower. Their locker rooms aren’t open for that so they have to go home and shower. Then we come back,” says UMaine head coach Amy Vachon, “We are taking two buses instead of one bus to make sure we are socially distanced. So, the whole team is not together. Stay in your room, come eat in the hotel room that we have, watch film, and go to the game.”
“Hand sanitizer and washing your hands all the time. Like every five minutes,” says UMaine guard Blanca Millan, “Other than that it’s like little things. It doesn’t take anything. Wear your mask. Don’t go see people. It’s hard to do but you have to do it.”
The pandemic creating new challenges for everyone. The Black Bear women’s basketball radio call is done by Don Shields. He is doing it from his home in Thomaston. It meant he had to improvise this week when the video feed he was calling from cut out.
“It said basket Millan, assist Saar. So I had Dor at the top of the key cutting down on the right side dishing inside to Blanca who laid it up and in,” says UMaine play by play announcer Don Shields, “Just a kind of who knows, kind of make it sound like I was actually seeing it.... You know there’s nothing like doing, sitting courtside and doing a division one game. Or sitting high in the rafters doing a D1 game. So I’m excited to get back there and doing it again.”
