Monroe man sentenced to 3 years behind bars for stealing more than $100,000
BELFAST, Maine (WABI) - A man from Monroe will spend three years behind bars for extorting more than $100,000 from someone who paid him to do work at their home.
David Webber was found guilty in February for stealing from Thomas Watson III.
Police arrested Webber in October of 2018 and charged him with theft by deception.
Prosecutors say Webber charged Watson for work he did not do.
Webber addressed the court Thursday asking for mercy for the sake of his wife and family.
”I have never seen a defendant get up and tell his side of the story after trial. He was stealing from people. It is all him. It is nobody else’s fault, and yet he showed emotion and regret today, and it’s got to be only regret that his day of atonement has come,” said Leanne Robbin.
Gene Sullivan, Webber’s Attorney said, “I certainly believe my client understands that he could have definitely done things differently and wishes he could do a lot better, and he understands that he has to accept responsibility for what he did do and try to do better going forward.”
The court also ordered Webber to pay Watson $70,000 in restitution.
