Meet Derick…a handsome young man who is waiting for his forever family. Derick was born in March of 1992 and he is described as sweet, charismatic and very caring, with a very fun sense of humor! All of which are evident when you meet him!

Like most teenage boys, Derick loves to play video games. He also likes to play basketball and go shopping. Derrick expresses his desire to try his best and reach goals he has set for himself. Derick says he likes listening to music and his favorites are rap and heavy metal music. When it is quiet, Derick enjoys reading and lists the Harry Potter series as his favorite books.

Derick says he likes school and he does well academically. He receives special education supports, but is generally mainstreamed in his classes. He likes hanging out with his friends at school the best. Derick has good skills with his peers and is well liked by his classmates and his teachers.

Derick wants to be a part of a family. He says he would like to live in a more country/ rural setting. Derick was also clear that he wants "no drama" in his family…he prefers when things are easy going, laid back and fun. A family that will allow him to continue contact with birth family is also important to him. Derick finds it challenging to handle environments that are too busy and therefore would benefit from a family that will be able to help him to manage situations that are over-stimulating and support his need for a safe space of his own he can go to when he needs to process how he is feeling.

Ask most 17-year old boys what they want for their birthday, and you'll probably get responses like video games, a new Ipod or clothes.

But Derick doesn't want any of that.

In fact, his birthday present can't be wrapped.

All this soon-to-be 18 year old wants, is a family to call his own.

Joy Hollowell recently talked to Derick at Family Fun Bowling Center in Bangor.

==============
"You're going to be 18 pretty soon, aren't you?

Going to go out into the big world.

The big, scary world (laughs)."

Probably a lot of questions you have, huh?

Yah."

Questions as well as concerns about how to act as an adult, and stay on the right path. Derick is already doing a good job of growing up. He does well in school and tells me he stays away from drugs and alcohol.

Derick obviously enjoys bowling, but says another sport makes the top spot on his list.

"Basketball, Basketball is like my life."

As for what he'd like to do with his life...

"I want to be able to learn to cook," says Derick.

Derick tells me he'd love to have a cook-off. The theme?

"Who can make the best American chop suey," he answers.

"It's like one of my favorite meals."

"Even more than steak and lobster?" I ask.

"Pretty much," he says.

Derick also enjoys listening to music. He says he doesn't sing...

"What about dancing? I ask.

"I can bust out a move," Derick answers confidantly.

Derick is looking for a family that enjoys the quieter side of life. He'd prefer to live in a country-setting, someplace where he feels safe.

"Just want a family," says Derick.

A family that loves you.

Pretty much."
