A man from Newport accused of killing his father and assaulting his mother has pleaded not guilty.

Monday, 45-year-old Perley Goodrich, Jr., pled not criminally responsible for the crimes by reason of insanity.

Goodrich was charged with murder and aggravated assault in the shooting death of his father and the severe beating of his mother in October.

He appeared in court briefly Monday to enter the pleas. The court has ordered a mental health evaluation.

Defense attorney Jeff Silverstein says Goodrich continues to suffer from significant mental health conditions, which, he says, his client had before the October incident.

"He was not able to receive the help that he needed and that his mother pled for him to receive. And as a consequence, at the time of these events he was psychotic. And we hope to develop further information to the fact that he didn't understand and was not in a right mind at the time of these offenses," Silverstein says.

Goodrich continues to be held without bail at Penobscot County Jail.
