Folks from the jewish community gathered Thursday night at Husson University to celebrate the start of a local chapter of J Street.
J Street is a national organization based out of Washington D.C.
The group advocates for a negotiated two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Thursday evening 21 newly formed local chapters gathered across the us for these celebrations.
Todd Miller, co-chair of J Street Eastern Maine, says there are many folks in the area that share the views of the organization.
"There were people here already of this mind, in fact poles state that three quarters of American Jews believe in a negotiated two state solution, it's just there wasn't an organization."
The festivities included traditional Israeli dancing and music, as well as an assortment of food.
There was also discussion regarding how the group can help promote a pro-peace movement.
