Central Maine Power has been given the green light by Maine utility regulators to invest in a "smart grid" system that will use automated, remote meter reading.
The technology is expected to reduce costs, improve customer service, and be more efficient.
It should also speed up the restoration of power after a storm.
The new system could save CMP customers as much as $25,000,000 over the next 20 years.
The Electrical Workers Union opposes "smart grid" because the union says it will cause layoffs.
