Firefighters responded to a house on Federal Street, a short distance from the state house, just after eleven o'clock Thursday morning.
Augusta's fire chief tells tv-5 that one of the owners discovered it when they came home.
We're told no one was injured in the fire, but one person was taken to the hospital.
Crews from several departments helped put the blaze out and kept it from spreading.
A neighbor was evacuated from their home after siding on their house started to burn.
"A lot of flames, it was horrible," Said Colleen Biron, who witnessed the fire. "We don't have enough housing as it is around here, nevermind to see something like this. It's heartbreaking."
The fire marshal's office has been called in to find a cause.
We're told the owners did have insurance, and that the Red Cross is assisting.
