On Monday, Deputies from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on the Plains Road in the Town of Readfield. Upon arrival at the scene Deputy Dave Bucknam observed a 2001 Chevy Impala fully engulfed in flames resting against several trees. The homeowner adjacent to the accident attempted to put the fire out. Rescue and Fire Units from Readfield , Mt. Vernon and Winthrop responded to the scene and extinguished the flames.
Further investigation revealed that the registered owner of the vehicle, Richard Sprague of Readfield had brought his vehicle to Alton Curtis dob of the Rat Mill Road, in Readfield for repairs. Kathie Curtis, also of the Rat Mill Road, and wife of Alton, had taken the vehicle for a short drive to the store.
Evidence at the scene determined that Kathie Curtis had driven approximately 1.5 miles down the Plains Road, when she left the roadway, traveled 919 feet of the road and struck the trees. The vehicle sustained extensive frontal damage and was engulfed in flames. Rescue workers were unable to free Kathie Curtis from the vehicle prior to her death.
