A corner on Main Street in Lincoln has been vacant for the past eight years, after fire burned the mall that once stood there.

Now the area is getting a new life.

Officials broke ground Friday on the Lakeview Senior Housing project.

It's a 24-unit housing complex being developed by Penquis. The units will be available to people 55 years and older whose income meets certain guidelines.

Folks with the project say thanks to the town's involvement, they were able to tap into state and federal grants to get the project underway.

"They were extraordinary in rising to help cobble all this effort together so we are grateful," says Stephen Mooers, Penquis Housing CEO. "And the people who will inhabit Lakeview Senior Housing should be grateful to this town, it says a lot for them."

Penquis officials say with an aging population, there's a great need for local, affordable senior housing. By putting it downtown, it helps folks get to the drug store and Main Street businesses easily and helps with the area's revitalization effort.

They're hoping to have residents moving in by November 2010.
