The hope is to eventually build deep sea wind turbines off the coast of Maine. State officals, including Governor Baldacci, were on Vinalhaven Tuesday to welcome Statoil, the only company in the world to actually build a deep sea wind turbine. "This is a big player on the international scene," says Baldacci, "and this is the company that is most likely going to start building these sooner rather than later and we want them to do it with maine, we want them to do it with maine companies, and we want the citizens of maine to benefit."
Tuesday's activities caught the attention of the folks in Washington. Senator Collins Chief of Staff Steve Abbot was on hand. "People in Washington are extremely excited about this project," he says, "already the federal government has contributed $13 million to develop deep offshore wind." Baldacci agrees that could give Maine's lagging economy a big boost. "It's Maine's vision of being able to have a deep sea wind project, 15,000 jobs, $20 billion of private investment over the next 20 years."
